Personal Statement

Shortly after completing my education, I commenced working as a trainee

claims negotiator for The Guardian Royal Exchange Insurance Company.

Within a short time, I realised that I really wanted to do something

different. Together with a friend, we went to France in the spring of

1979, intending to work abroad. At this time, I realised, I needed a

career rather than a job. In September 1979, I applied to join Greater

Manchester Police as a police constable. I was accepted and commenced

my service on 23rd June 1980 and retired on 22nd June 2010 after

completing 30 years service.

Experience

1980 - 1985. Collyhurst Police Station, North Manchester Division. I was a

foot patrol officer and in those days of the service you did not become

a driver until you had completed a number of years service. I became a

police driver in 1983. During my time there, I worked as a plain

clothes officer and completed my first experience as a station officer,

running the enquiry desk of a small police station and assisting patrol

officers. Early on in my service, I got married and my wife and I,

purchased a house in Wigan.

1985 – 1987. Westhoughton Police Station, Bolton Division. During my time I was a mobile patrol officer and station officer. I worked at Westhoughton for 2 years. It was substantially

different experience than working a busy inner city division like North

Manchester. I regularly worked alone, without back up, apart from a

different sub-division. During my time there, I broke my neck on duty.

I returned to work early, against my General Practitioners wishes. He

did agree, with my desires for me to return to work. However, he only

agreed, as a result of being offered the role as station officer. He

deemed it a role, where I was less likely to come into contact with an

'angry man'!

1987 – 2000. Wigan Division. I worked at various stations whils on The Wigan Division - Wigan, Pemberton, Aspull, Sandish, Ince and Ashton. My duties included station

officer, community officer and plain clothes officer. I worked regularly

in major incident rooms, including two murder enquiries. I was also

Wigan Divisions first dedicated wildlife liaison officer, which I

carried out for a number of years, until shortly before I transferred to my next division.

2000 – 2010 Police Officer, Rochdale Division iI worked at Middleton,

Heywood and Rochdale. I became a community officer. I also was seconded

to a private charity - Crime Concern. Crime Concern, worked with a

number of the perceived most likely youngsters, to offend within a

specified area. I was the first officer, from Greater Manchester Police,

to be seconded in such a way. Unfortunately, funding became an issue

and I then became part of the initial, customer service teams being set

up in Greater Manchester. I retired on 22nd June 2010 after completing

30 years good and unblemished service.

2010 – 2011. Semi Retired – I currently own and run a market stall. I work two days

a week, repairing watches and cut keys amongst other things. I am

completely self taught in what I now do. In the short time I

have been involved in market trading, I have progressed to changing

Watch/clock movements, sorting over wound watches and selling an expanding

selection of items retail. I have considered commencing a course with The British Horological Society.

.

Previous Roles

As a police officer, I did a number of volunteering jobs. After

Adoption and Oldham N.H.S. Trust being two. With the trust I was a

bereavement counsellor. Claims Insurance Negotiator for The Guardian Royal

Exchange Insurance Company. Between applying and joining Police Force,

I had various jobs: a clerk, a shop assistant for Asda, labourer for a

sprinkler fitting company and barman.

Key Achievements

A Royal Humane Society Award for bravery. Two Police commendations and

numerous good work minutes. I received my long service medal after 22

years. I completed 30 years good and unblemished service in Police

Force.
