About Me

My name is João Vaz I am a Portuguese guy living in Manchester and I am passionate for music and rhythm in particular. Drum performance is key part of who I am since my childhood. I started having drum lessons when I was 6 years old at I.M.M.A (Institute of Modern Music and Arts) located in my hometown, Lousã. At 13, after years of study, classes and auditions at the music school, I gave my first live concert with a covers band named ‘Encodes’, since then I performed in a lot of live concerts throughout Portugal and outside the country too. Since I started to play drums I always worked hard to improve my technical capacities and musical abilities.

I undertook a professional course as a Jazz Instrumentalist during high school at the Art School of Coimbra where I had musical theory lessons, Big Band experience, Jazz Combo work and two weekly drum lessons where I vastly improved myself as a musician. I also had more than 50 concerts during this course with different combo formations and the big band of the Coimbra Conservatory. During these years, I developed various useful skills that alongside my musicality, my will to learn and improve myself will prove important factors in my success in the industry. I am an open minded and social person, I like to work in collaborative environments as well as learn and share experiences with people from different backgrounds.

Once finished with the jazz course, I started to join two cover bands where I played drums and developed my vocal skills as backing vocalist. In one of them, ‘Ponto e Virgula’, I performed several different music genres such Rock, Pop, Reggae and Funk. In the other project, ‘Adriana Fernandes & Bandonada’, I played Pop, Indie, Soul, Funk and Hip-hop. I did almost 50 concerts in this last two years, in private and public events, as an element of these two bands. I learned a lot with my professors and colleagues who taught me how to behave and interact on the stage, how to build an event and how everything related to the stage works. I think that all this experience will prove crucial in my future career.

On this last year I began working on an original project, where I gave my contribution as a co-author and drummer, alongside a friend of mine, Tiago Pereira, we shared our influences, advices, and worked together to improve our capacities. We are still working and developing our idea and product as we work on our first EP. I identify myself with this project and I want to improve my musical skills sot to give a bigger contribution to our music.
