About Me
The performance industry has always interested me; I have always had an involved and active role in theatre since a young age upon joining Cleveland Theatre School. The theatre school offered fantastic facilities and inspired me to make the most of them. I value drama personally, as it is a very important social tool whereby through playing a part you can impact significantly on an audience. My ambition drives me outside of the classroom as I find myself reading about theatre or researching information on new shows and making regular trips to see a variety of live theatre. The theatre school trained me in areas of performance and technical theatre such as, hemp house flying, stage lighting and I dedicated time to help build and design sets, as well as take an involvement in the shows performed. These included musical cabarets, children's Christmas shows and personally directing a large variety show for Macmillan Cancer.
In 2008 I was awarded a Drama scholarship to Gordonstoun School. The Drama Department has provided me with many opportunities outside the curriculum and given me a chance to expand my knowledge and skills of theatre practice. This summer I played Peter Quince in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Nights Dream" which was performed in school to mark its 75th Anniversary, it then toured to the Edinburgh Fringe in the summer of 2009 receiving excellent reviews; and will also tour the USA in 2010. During my time at school I have performed in an adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. For my final piece of my AS unit I played Steve from Steven Berkoff's Decadence. This winter I will be involved in devising a piece of children's theatre to tour primary schools and will also take on the role of Monsieur Thenardier in Les Miserables. By doing this I have discovered that performance needs dedication and commitment. I enjoy the challenges given in performance, the excitement of productions, the enthusiasm of a cast and the outstanding level of teamwork a production requires. I have also passed a BTEC National Diploma In Performing Arts Level 2.
Outside of my academic timetable I am committed to dance, sport, literature, music and service to the local community. I achieved the role of Dance Captain in the summer term, and participated in the running of the department and the scheduling of students. I currently am one of the schools 15 colour bearers (Prefects) elected by staff and students. This is a role that involves leadership and commitment and ensuring the student's views are made known to the management team and the headmaster.
Being at Gordonstoun has offered me a chance to take part in a variety of sports such as hockey, tennis & swimming. I am a member of the Lifeguard Service, and am currently training to be a pool lifeguard. I also have begun working on my DoE Gold award. During my time at Gordonstoun I have participated on a 1-week sail-training voyage to the outer-Hebrides and St.Kilda. Teamwork became essential as we were totally in charge of the vessel several times during the week as well as preparing meals for those on deck, and supporting those who felt ill. In the summer of 2009 I took part in an International Service Project to Romania to work in Little Johns Orphanage Sibiu. We provided a range of activities such as crafts, sport and a performance related entertainment. To make this possible I organised an evening of dance that raised GBP 900 and through giving a presentation to sponsors I managed to build up the total to GBP 1,300. In Romania I was able to use my communications skills to be able to work with the children, and found this to be an extremely rewarding time. I believe I have the potential to succeed in this competitive industry that I have such respect for. Also I really enjoy improving my skills because I know I have much more to learn. My intention is to study both acting and directing and to be able to enter the performing arts industry a confident and experienced individual.
