About Me

I am currently in my 4th year at the University of Stirling, studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I enjoy university and find Economics the most interesting of the three. My short term goal is to achieve a 2.1 degree. Outside of studying I am a very keen golfer and sport has always played a big part in my life. I write a golf putting competition blog, and also have a deep interest in current affairs and financial markets.
My fourth year dissertation title is “From the EU-15's perspective was the enlargement in 2004 for political or economic reasons?” By immersing myself in the study, I have developed an intense interest in the European Union.
• I am a keen sportswoman and play golf, football, table tennis and run. My golf handicap is 3. I currently play at Marriott Dalmahoy and have won the Ladies Club Championship 2007-2009 inclusive.
• In the summer of 2010 a fellow golfer and I started an in-club putting competition, aimed at all sections of the club, with a view to improving the putting of participants. Our highest turn out for our weekly competition was 24 competitors. Even though this was small compared to total members, we received good feedback and regular participants kept coming back. We will improve the putting competition this year through wider advertising- making sure all golf and leisure members are aware, and we hope to gain advertisement on the club website. In addition to the competition I started a website to record scores and advertise special events within the competition. The blog, which is humorous, can be read at http://dalmahoyputtingcomp.blogspot.com. After finishing the competition, I wanted to continue my comic writing so sent a transcript of my weekly writing to publications- the Scotsman, Guardian, National Club Golfer etc. for the consideration of the Editor. The National Club Golfer have put on file, however to date I haven't received any assignments! Also I have been working on turning the blog into a script. With the first draft completed, I will be reworking it before sending it off. To expand the competition further, I am sending the idea out to golf clubs around the Edinburgh area to gauge interest in running the same competition at other clubs.
• My blog has grown into a website, www.thedalmahoyputtingcompetition.com. I have begun building my second website www.thesportsresource.com
• I have been recruited to write for a golf website called the Secret of Putting. My role will be to write all the content for the website and also help with its up keep and maintenance. Hopefully working closely with developers I will be able to improve my programming skills.
• To enhance my political understanding I was a campaigner in the most recent elections for one of the main parties in Edinburgh South. The MP that I was campaigning for won by a small majority.
• This summer I will have the opportunity to intern with Ian Murray.
• Junior Ambassador for 2010 at my golf club Dalmahoy. My duties with this are to participate in helping and coaching youngsters in the club and help with their development. The main achievements from this are that I have been able to cultivate talent and mentor young golfers in the correct use of time and application of their skills.
• I ran my first half marathon at the Glasgow Great Scottish Run. It took me 2hrs 8mins- I didn't trouble the leading pack! The training was difficult to a degree but it allowed me to pick a sport that I had never followed before and accomplish something worth while in it. I have started running 5km on Saturday mornings through the organization Park run. Currently my PB is 27.29mins, however this year my goal is to run a sub 23 minute.
• I am the King Malcolm Close Marie Curie Charity Collector. My duties for this are to once a year collect donations from my street and be the link for my street to the charity. I participated in the Marie Curie Walk 10 event, raising sponsorship.
• I have also recently started my own investment portfolio.
• This year I became a Scout leader. Also it has allowed me to cultivate leadership skills by helping run a Scout troop of over 30 boys. I am in charge of the database too.
• I have completed my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze
• IT Skills- I have a standard grade 1 in Computing Studies and am skilled in all basic proficiencies, such as word, spreadsheets, database and power point. I have basic training in web design, SAGE, MS Access, however if I need further training in IT programs to be part of the internship I am keen to learn, as I enjoy it immensely. At current I am continuing my learning of Java so as to be able to create and maintain websites.
• To learn the skills to follow a career in IT and mobile applications, I am applying to do an MSc in Advanced Computing at the University of Stirling in 2011-2012.
