Job Spec
We are a 6 piece original band based in South Birmingham, fully professional (full-time in the band without teaching or other work commitments) with UK and international tours booked up already through to the summer of 2015. We have been together for about 4 years now and we play vintage inspired swing, but with a modern twist. We are looking for a female lead singer to join, at first on a temporary basis, but with a view to becoming an equal stake partner in the band. We are a very theatrical band so stage presence is really important to us, and we are looking for people from a wide range of backgrounds, including musical theatre.
The Role
We play on average between 2 and 4 shows a weekend and have 1 or 2 rehearsals mid-week. We are based in South Birmingham which is our base for rehearsals and leaving for gigs, but as long as you are able to get here then that’s fine with us.
In the short term we are looking to fill this on a per-gig basis and wouldn’t ask you to commit to every show, but long term we are looking for a full-time member.
Person requirements
We are looking for someone who is:
• An outstanding singer – not just a good singer. Being able to pick out harmonies and able to sing well as a duo is essential; effectively we have two female lead singers so you need to be able to balance and work with someone else. Formal training is preferred but not essential.
• An outstanding stage presence and competent dancer – our stage show involves a lot of movement, it is absolutely essential that you are at ease on stage and happy dancing, whether freestyle or routines.
We don’t have any age requirements but we are all between 25 and 30, so as long as you are at ease and happy to fit in and work with the group then that is the most important thing.
What is good about the role...
You will tour the UK, Europe and the rest of the world, then spend the rest of your time writing music and rehearsing as a group. It is an amazing opportunity for the right person. We normally have 2 shows a weekend (usually Friday and Saturday) and then more through the festival period. We play a lot of festivals, including Glastonbury, Boomtown and Shambala etc. We have just come back from a tour in the Southern Hemisphere and are back out there in March.
We are a really close team, touring as a party of 7 including our sound engineer, and touring as a unit is really fun. We like to let our hair down after shows too, so if you like to party you will have a lot of fun - we have a work-hard, play-hard attitude.
We are currently writing for a new album and you would be involved with that. We write our songs as a group so if you like to write then it will be a really exciting time (if you don’t that’s not a problem).
What might be a problem for some people...
The person joining us will need to be totally committed to the group. We are totally dependent on each other, both to earn money and progress the business, and we are six people who need to be there at every show - so in 2015, like 2014, everyone needs to commit to gigging every weekend with no exceptions. This means sometimes missing important occasions, birthdays and weddings etc. It is also hard work. There is a lot of travelling, nights without sleep (because of travelling or partying) and sleeping in tents at festivals, as we often do.
We work very closely with each other and there isn’t a lot of personal space. We often share rooms in hotels, bunk up in double beds or on the floor. Most of the life isn’t glamorous at all, so please bear this in mind if you are thinking of applying. We are self-managed and self-released, so we do most of the business/admin work ourselves, so someone who is business/marketing minded would be a bonus, but not essential.
Salary
In the short term we would pay a per-gig fee, which is negotiable through the probation period . Afterwards you would become a partner in the business, with a monthly salary (circa £1000 per month) with bonuses paid when there is available cash that does not need to be invested in the band.
Application
To apply please send us an email to tom@thestagebus.com and please include at least one link to a video of you singing – this can be anything from a professional studio recording to a phone camera.
Please also include a CV or covering letter, any/all links to music/performances of any styles, relevant experience in things like musical theatre etc.
These are the questions we are asking so the more info you can provide about this the better:
• Are you a fantastic singer?
• Are you a fantastic performer with a great stage presence?
• Are you looking to commit to this sort of lifestyle and career?
We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible so will be interviewing and auditioning candidates as soon as we receive applications. There will therefore be a rolling deadline with first applicants contacted 15/01/2015. Any questions please do get in touch and we will do our best to help.
Please note that we are not making the full details public knowledge as the band are still taking bookings and don’t want to make the fact that we are looking public knowledge. We request that you respect the confidentiality of this process with any subsequent information you are given regarding the role.
