Dawn is a mobile hairdresser in the suburban North East. A few years out of school, she's living with her high school heart-throb, has a great social life and business has been steady, but all that could be set to change, and quickly - Dawn is pregnant.

Dawn visits three clients, in three snapshots of suburban life at three different stages of her pregnancy. As she talks and tends to her clients, Dawn faces up to a new world of mother-shaming and body image nightmares, high hopes and sudden responsibilities. Through their conversations, she finds each of her customers at their own cross-roads, with their own dreams and expectations rooted, for the moment, in the promise of a brand new haircut.

LOCATION: Newcastle Upon Tyne/Cramlington, Northumberland and surrounding region. Due to limited budget for transport costs, all applicants MUST be based in the area.

***For all roles, we are looking for very naturalistic performers who reflect and identify with the mainly working class background of the characters.***


ROLES
-----

DAWN (FEMALE LEAD, AGED 19-26)
A friendly, charismatic mobile hairdesser who works hard in the week, then parties the weekend away. Originally from a rough estate at the far end of town, she's not ashamed of her roots. This is her first pregnancy.

The perfect fit for the role of Dawn would have some experience in the field of hair and beauty, ideally a salon-experienced stylist, though this is not essential. This is a role with huge potential to expand in the forthcoming feature film 'DAWN & CLARE'.


COURTNEY (FEMALE, AGED 16-21)
A lively, vain teen loving her freedom and planning for a big summer. She's very talkative, and always has the best of intentions, but doesn't always know where the line is, occasionally finding that her mouth runs away with her.


SAMANTHA (FEMALE, AGED 19-28)
Almost settled in a middle class part of town, Sam prides herself on her healthy lifestyle and all-organic diet, and she never tires of recommending it. But with two kids and a wedding any day now, she's keen to give her younger days a proper send-off.


TANYA (FEMALE, AGED 45-65)
Tanya is a new grandma, very wise and recently retired on a modest pension. She's getting her second wind. She's discovered Facebook and likes keeping tabs on the extended family, as well as on her favourite young leading men from the telly.

'ROOTS' is written and directed by Garry Sykes, the son of a mobile hairdresser, who has gone on to direct two micro-budget features and worked as producer, cameraman or editor on four more.
