Details:
As part of the Barnsley Civic Scratch Night on 18th July, we are looking for three Leeds based (or close by) actors for a scratch & script in hand performance of excerpts from “ Islands” a new script we are currently developing.
What’s it about?
Josie, a young woman and her father Alan live alone in a run-down old house, the only inhabitants of an island stalked by the ‘Beast’ somewhere off the coast of a war torn England a place which Alan describes as “filled with the screams of the dying, where the nights are lit by fires and people fight over food and water”. When Jack comes to take Alan to the mainland, and ends up staying the night, Josie realises that not everything her father has told her is the truth. After a stormy night Jack convinces Josie to sneak away with him to see what the world is really like but Alan stops them and in doing so changes the balance of power between himself and his daughter forever.
Alan (Josie’s Father)
Alan is a physically imposing and strong man in his late 40’s / early 50’s. He has lived on the island most of his adult life, and is very protective of his only daughter Josie. He has done everything he can to shelter her from the threatening world beyond their isolated island. Now his health is fading he needs to prepare Josie’s future. On first meeting him Alan appears to be a good and well natured man, but he has a darker more disturbing side to his nature.
Josie
Josie is a young woman in her early 20s. She has lived with her father, Alan on the island since she was born, and has never been to the mainland. Her world is very small and consistent and her father’s stories and fairy tales are all she knows of the world beyond. She appears to be very naive in some ways but unnervingly knowing in others. Josie has a strong bond with her father, but craves something new and different.
Jack
Jack is a young man in his mid to late 20’s. He is an ornithologist who is working on another small island close by. Alan has asked him to tow his boat over to the mainland so it can be repaired. Jack is a modern, decent, kind young man with great charm and warmth who will go out of his way to help others.

It would be great to link up with actors who were interested in the possibility of embarking on this journey with us from the outset.
