The Neat Streets campaign
Keep Scotland Beautiful are the environmental charity that is committed to keeping Scotland clean, green and sustainable. We are trialing innovative ways to reduce littering and as part of this we have launched Neat Streets in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. This behaviour change campaign explores different ways of encouraging people to responsibly dispose of their waste.
The Trashconverter idea
A large proportion of the Grassmarket’s littering problem arises from the night time economy and the Trashconverters is one of the ways we are tackling this. After a successful trial in London by our partners, Hubbub, we will be testing whether exchanging people’s rubbish for something more interesting will reduce the litter problem in the Grassmarket.
Role
There will be two Trashconverters patrolling the Grassmarket, offering to take people’s litter off them in exchange for a lollipop. You will be in fancy dress as a comical executioner, in line with the Grassmarket’s history as a place of execution. The gruff executioner is calling for litter to keep the Grassmarket looking nice. It will be your role to engage with people and encourage them to drop off their litter with you. You will encourage people to put their litter directly into the rubbish push cart we’ll provide (you won’t need to handle the litter yourself), and you’ll reward them with a lollipop.
Essential characteristics
Ability to engage with the public in a friendly and positive manner
Have a pro-active approach to people who might have litter to dispose of
Act non-judgementally and encourage people to responsibly dispose of their litter
Ability to explain the basics of the campaign and why not littering is important (brief will be given on this)
Timetable
The shift will take place on the 30th July 2016, for 2 hours and 45 mins. You should also expect a 15 minute phone call ahead of the event to brief you as well.
11.30pm – 12am: briefing, meeting and change into costume
12am – 2am: perform as Trashconverter
2am - 2.15am: finish and change
For more information or a chat about the role, get in touch with Nik or Georgina on 01786 471333. To apply, email us with a few sentences on why you\'d like to be a Trashconverter, plus CV and head-shot (showreel/audio reel a bonus) to neatstreets@keepscotlandbeautiful.org
