We are producing a 15 minute romance drama film as part of our graduate project for the MA Filmmaking course at the University of Sussex.

The film ‘Charlie’ is a romance drama about a 15 year old boy who is starting his transition into a female, and how he deals with the love spark between him and his new stepdad.

The story focuses on the emotional journey of the transitioning teen, his mother’s struggle to accept the transition as well as their relationships with the stepdad.

There are three main roles needed to be filled in this film.

Charlie: Male, 15-20. Charlie is an androgynous looking teenager who’s quiet and introverted. He’s trying to come up with the courage to be true to his real self, but fears the reactions of those closest to him. His recent crush on his mother’s new husband isn’t helping his situation either. (This role requires the actor to be comfortable with playing the role of a female actor at some points in the script).

Mary: Female, 30-40. Mary is a teen mother who recently got married to the man of her dreams. She’s a loving mother but doesn’t adapt well with change that might affect her new found happiness.

Tom: Male, 28-38. Tom is a laid back type of man who is very accepting of modern views. He holds more value on genuine people than anything else. After marrying Mary, he’s looking forward to getting to know Charlie, who he hopes to get along well with. (This role requires the actor to be comfortable with acting next to a younger male actor in a romantic relationship).

These roles are perfect for actors who wish to gain more experience in playing and exploring unique characters, which they will be able to develop further with the director during rehearsals.

Therefore, we welcome anyone who has any or no training, background and experience, but hope that all applicants will be highly committed to the role.

That being said, the production requires actors to be available for 4 - 5 rehearsal days during the last two weeks of July, which will be flexible to their availability. They must also be available for 4 - 5 days of shooting from the 28th of July to the 1st of August.

Those who are cast will be provided a small fee for the shooting days as well as all travel expenses will be covered during rehearsals and shooting days for the three cast members. Also, food and drink will be provided on location during the shooting of the film.

Once the film is completed, each actor will be provided a copy of the film for their show reel. The film will also be submitted to several international film festivals.

Casting will take place on Monday the 18th of July and Tuesday the 19th of July, from 11:00 – 15:00. Please indicate your preferred date and time slot: 

11:00, 11:30, 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30, 15:00.
