We are seeking a female actor for the role of Fraser’s Mother in the upcoming social realist short film 'Bitter Taste' by award-winning Scottish Director Ethan Race and New York City-based team Nominal Content.

Chef Fraser is the the head chef of a Michelin-starred restaurant in New York City. Yet when asked one night to personally make his “chef’s special apple crumble,” he is harkened back to his childhood growing up on a rough Glaswegian housing scheme, and by thoughts of the woman who taught him his recipe— his mother.

Set in 1990, Fraser’s Mother is a strong Glaswegian working-class woman who is committed to her son, Fraser (14 years old). Fraser is hospitalised after being attacked by a knife gang in a rival housing scheme, and when he is let out of hospital, Fraser’s Mother walks him home. Upon entering their apartment, she quickly runs to kitchen to fetch Fraser’s favorite dish -- apple crumble. She rests his head on her shoulder and feeds it to him as a comfort. Weeks later Fraser still refuses to go to school, traumatised by the encounter. But Fraser’s Mother is determined to teach him a trade, and begins home-teaching him the basics of cooking.

The applicants' playing age should be 30-45, their accent should be Glasweigan, and they should be able to capture the strength and warmth of a working-class mother. A good grasp of cooking is a plus.

The applicants must be available on the 15th-17th of December, although they will only be needed for one to one and a half of those days for shooting. All filming will take place in the Glasgow City Local Authority area.

Due to the low-budget, independent nature of the production, participation will be on an unpaid voluntary basis. However, food will be provided as well as a travel stipend for your petrol costs.
