Elevator Pitch

The piece explores a metaphorical space within the mind of the character of Conway in the moments prior to his imminent suicide by drowning.

Themes

The key theme around which the piece is centred is suicide. Alongside this primary theme additional themes found within the screenplay include; the blurring of boundaries between the reality of real life and the self constructed reality within the mind, drowning, sexuality and memory.

Audience

This film will appeal to a variety of viewers as it’s subject matter will attract anyone who has ever questions what occurs when we die in a philosophical manner, particularly adults due to the dark subject matter.

Outline

This short film follows a conservative young man in his late twenties named Conway. Upon initially meeting Conway he appears within the bedroom of a run down and dated bed and breakfast, seemingly on a business trip of some sort, however gradually the blue room in which he stands begins to disintegrate.

Through the creation of a surreal space and the insertion of flashing images of Conway wading into the ocean, it is revealed that we are baring witness to the inner mind of Conway as he commits suicide by drowning.

As the film progresses the boundaries between the real world and the world constructed within Conway’s mind become increasingly blurred. The water in which he drowns begins to poor into the room and Conway’s distorted memories manifest in the form of shadowy projections within the space; each revealing insights into the reasons for suicide.

Visual and Audio Details

The piece is visually led, including no dialogue; therefore the quality of the images and alternative sound material used within the piece will act as the key tools in the construction of narrative.

The sounds used within the piece will comprise of a combination diegetic sounds including those of Conway as he navigates around the space, alongside abstract sounds including the sound of arguing voices augmented in order to sound as though heard from underwater.

All of the images used within the piece would be constructed through highly composed shots making use of tracking shots and extreme close ups in various manners to express the varying quality of the images between the frantic and the serene.

The atmosphere of the film is dark; within the interior space the light appears to be solely emitted from a single standard lamp, however as the piece progresses the lighting is to become increasingly hard and non naturalistic, casting bizarre shadows; it’s source appearing unclear enhancing the sense that an alternative reality is being formed on screen.

The key colour used within the piece is a deep blue/teal, symbolic of the ocean. The colours used within the interior space of the blue room would be rich and bold whilst, in stark contrast, the external, ‘real world’ images of Conway as he drowns would initially appear de-saturated and grey. This greyness however would gradually be lifted until the final images in the external space appear as vibrant as those within the blue room, blurring the boundaries between the two sets of images.
