THE COSSACK

Based on Anton Chekhov’s short story
A short film project created by Shen Wei

Easter, a man drives home with his wife. On their way, they see a sicken Cossack horseman lying on the country road. Should they take a seemingly blasphemous action by offering the horseman a slice of blessed Easter Cake, or leave him to die in the middle of nowhere?

Shen Wei was born in China. He obtained bachelor of arts in philosophy from King’s College London and further studied filmmaking at University of Southern California. Shen Wei is now working as freelance artist based in Beijing and London, with film and performance as his major mediums.

Shen Wei’s short films had been screened in several film festivals across the world, including London International Student Film Festival, Macau Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Market. His feature script A Most Peculiar Man was selected in Hong Kong Film Forum (2013) and Venice Film Festival (2015). His theatre project Ubu was shown at National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing, and West was one of the 3 finalists at Young Artists’ Competition in Wuzhen Festival (2014).

This 5 minute short film is a collaborative project involving improvised dialogue (no scripts). With micro budget we will make a short film comprised of several long takes.

This film will be shot on a Blackmagic 4k Cinematic Camera over 2 separate days, on 30th and 31st August. The shooting will take place on a country road near London (hopefully Yattendon or Hertfordshire), and in a flat in central London. Only two filmmakers and the actors will comprise the entire crew/cast.

Casting requirements:
1. The protagonists: a man and a woman over 30.
2. The horseman: a man over 20.

We are respectful of actors and are seeking people who are willing to experiment and understand the fun of this project. We will have an enjoyable creative process / road trip. The actors will get copies of the final film and all info on future screenings.
