Job Specifics:

Details:
Tea for Tabitha is an original play to be produced by Blanket Theatre, an up and coming theatre company from New Zealand now based in London. The play has been accepted into the Brighton fringe festival in May this year as well as the Edinburgh fringe festival in August.
Blanket theatre are looking to cast a male actor in the lead role with rehearsals beginning 1st April. Performance dates for Brighton are 4th - 10th May.
Ideally we are looking for someone who is available during the day and weekends for rehearsals although evening rehearsals can be negotiated. Rehearsals will most likely be taking place in SE London. It may be possible to commute to Brighton for the season as it is only an hour's journey although we are in the process of arranging communal accommodation.
We are interested in seeing actors who have had some amount of training and experience in theatre and are looking to make long term connections within a growing theatre company. You will hopefully be able to commit not only to the Brighton season but also to travelling with us to Edinburgh and maybe even a performance season in London later on in the year.
We are a small company but with a solid foundation in producing and touring shows. We write and devise our own work and we are looking for actors who are interested in working in the same way. This is an opportunity to form a collaborative relationship that could be profitable in years to come.
Tea for Tabitha is set in 1930’s New Zealand. Henry and Blythe, 6 and 9 years old, are struggling with the recent separation of their parents and subsequent sense of abandonment. Although they play, fight and make believe as normal children do, their games are wrought with unanswered questions and adult worries. Intertwined with the children's world is that of the adults; snippets of their history being played out to hint at the reasoning behind their split.
The play will be performed in Brighton and Edinburgh as part of the Laughing Horse Free Fringe. This means there is no charge for venue hire and therefore zero risk. However we are not allowed to charge any ticket fees as this will be marketed as a free show. We do ask for donations from audience members and any that are collected will be split between the two actors and director. We were in the free fringe last year and found that an average donation was around 2 pounds per head. With a capacity of 100 seats this can be fairly profitable when there is no theatre hire deducted.
We believe that Tea for Tabitha is a strong play and will do well at the festivals which is why we have put it forward for both in succession. We are aiming to gain some critical success which will allow us to stage the play elsewhere for a higher profit.
Although we cannot guarantee any payment, we believe that performing in the festivals is a great opportunity for up and coming actors to raise their profile and therefore worth putting in the time and effort. If this sounds like something you want to be a part of please apply and we look forward to seeing you!
