"Tears of Laughter" is the story of 30-year-old Oscar, who traded his working-class youth for the time of his life in the circus for the last 15 years. After returning to his hometown, he quickly discovers that the equality and joy he experienced is not lived, let alone celebrated there. Fortunately, Oscar finds warmth on the stage of a local comedy club while trying to defy the cold society with his hope and optimism offstage. But reality doesn’t want to stop brutally hitting him, with heart- and man-breaking consequences.

“Tears of Laughter” is a new musical written by Sarah Kohl and Tomas Williamson as part of the MA Musical Theatre degree at Goldsmiths, University of London. It will be performed from 14 to 18 September 2021 at the Tristan Bates Theatre in London. Rehearsals will take place from 23 August 2021.

For the production, we are casting the following role:
- LILLY, playing age 25-35, female, mezzo/belt, Black: stand-up comedian and Oscar's love interest

The audition will take place on 9 July 2021 starting from 2:30 pm. We are looking forward to holding it live at Goldsmiths, University of London, but are also open to holding Zoom calls with anyone unable to attend in person. You will receive further information about audition materials via email.

While there is a small budget for the performances, this will not be a position paying full professional rates. We are happy to discuss the fees available in more detail via email.
