Details:
Fade into You is a (roughly) 40-minute-long drama inspired by the works of filmmakers such as Jacques Rivette, Phillipe Garrel, José Luis Guerin, John Cassavetes, and Abel Ferrara.
Fade into You is written and directed by award-winning journalist and author James Slaymaker. It is being produced in association with the online streaming site MUBI and fashion designer Federica Foglia. The finished product will be submitted to various festivals including TIFF Wavelenghs, Cannes and Raindance.
The narrative revolves around an inexperienced young actress, Anna, who is invited to play the lead role in a play being staged by Nick Sicinski, a bipolar, formally successful theatre director whose erratic behaviour and substance abuse has brought about the collapse of his career. Nick develops a fixation on Anna and gradually takes over her life, and it’s not long before Anna is unable to differentiate between fiction and reality, stage acting and social performance. As in Rivette and Jean Rouch, the issues discussed as discourse during the production of the play (what desire means; the way daydreamers deferring drudgery recast their lives in the image of fiction ; the difference between a woman and a muse; how a lover influences the beloved and vice versa; is artistic style a product of an original creative process, or largely a result of circumstance) spill into the outside world as the primary actors and crew members become entangled in a complex web of flirtations, rivalries and fluctuating power dynamics.
