CASTING CALL - DATING MR. DARCY
Roles needed: 8
Gender: male/female
Age range: 26-38
Production title: Dating Mr. Darcy
Production type: short film (Final project for MA in Digital Film and Television Production at University of York)
Length: 18 minutes
Shooting dates: first half of June
Location: York
Payment: Expenses paid
Synopsis: Charlotte is an independent, career-driven, modern woman with a passion for the literary works of Jane Austen and the Brönte sisters. Their stories have shaped her ideal man on the likes of Mr. Darcy, Mr. Rochester and Heathcliff, and nothing less than that would do for her. Persuaded by her best friend Alicia to get back into the dating game, she dates three men who turn out to be modern versions of her literary crushes. The dates are a total disaster, but Alex, the outgoing and charming bartender, comes to the rescue to put her experiences into perspective and to be the first man ever to make Charlotte laugh. Is he, then, the One? Maybe not, as his fiancée and soon-to-be bride walks into the pub to sweep him away. With her though, is Alex’s brother Daniel, an awkward-looking but strangely attractive guy, very different from Charlotte’s ideal, but perhaps reality can surpass the dream.
Character: Charlotte
Gender: female
Playing age: 29
Special requirements: Native American or ability to speak in an American accent
Description: Charlotte is a strong, successful, witty and career-driven American journalist who, being a hopeless anglophile, is starting a new chapter of her life in the UK. She is an elegant woman, who always dresses on point and looks professional. Beneath her hard surface lies a romantic soul in search for her ideal love, a concept which will finally be challenged by this new experience.
Character: Alex
Gender: male
Playing age: 30
Description: Alex is a youthful-looking, outgoing and charming bartender from Yorkshire. He is who we’re led to believe Charlotte will end up with, but in reality all his attentions for her are due to his curious and extrovert nature. He is a genuinely friendly guy and genuinely in love with his fiancée Jane.
Character: Wilfred
Gender: male
Playing age: 30
Description: Wilfred is the modern equivalent to Mr. Darcy. An upper-class man, very elegant, refined and handsome. His family owns an historic estate in Yorkshire. Stiff and detached in demeanour, he’s interested by Charlotte’s successes, but is ultimately put off by her modest family background.
Character: Rupert
Gender: male
Playing age: 38
Description: Rupert is the modern equivalent to Mr. Rochester. Peculiarly charming for his age and gentleman-looking. He is a skilled orator, self-confident and knows how to charm ladies. What he hides is a bipolar wife living just next-door.
Character: Thomas
Gender: male
Playing age: 26
Description: Thomas is the modern equivalent to Heathcliff. He is a tall, dark and mysterious Yorkshire guy. Thomas seems to be gentle and outgoing, until a minor mishap is met with a sudden threatening reaction, that reveals his violent, possessive and overly passional nature.
Character: Daniel
Gender: male
Playing age: 31
Description: Alex’s brother Daniel is a well-behaved, shy and sweet guy. An americanophile and a novelist, he is tall and awkward-looking but unconventionally attractive. Instantly attracted to Charlotte, his simple and genuine nature may have attracted her as well.
Character: Jane
Gender: female
Playing age: 27
Description: Alex’s fiancée is perfection on earth. A beautiful, hippie-style woman, annoyingly gentle, sweet and perfect. She is so self-confident that the sight of his fiancé at a table with Charlotte doesn’t worry her for a second.
Character: Julianne
Gender: female
Playing age: 35
Description: Rupert’s bipolar wife is arguably the most comedic character of the film. She storms into Rupert’s apartment only to make tea, but she is actually determined to ruin his husband’s escapades.
It is going to be an exciting and fun project. The screenplay was awarded a First Class, and the actual film has the potential to be equally as good and to enter festivals across the country. I’m looking forward to assembling a great cast!
