5 mature actors (50 years plus) are required for a theatre in the community project.
The script of 'The Memory of Rain' is based on the real life testimonies of 5 people who experienced bereavement following the death of loved ones in a hospice. It was written from the transcripts of audio recorded interviews and the presentation will be devised with the actors.
The style of the play is 'stories within stories' and incorporates real life events with folk stories and poems on the theme of death and bereavement.
The play will be shown as part of the Living, Loving and Dying programme at St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham, which aims to raise awareness of the issues of death and dying with the local community.
The play will be performed in a community theatre in Sydenham on October 20th.
It will be a free event.
It is a full length play with an interval, and each actor will play a main character, and in addition multiple roles. All actors will be present on stage throughout the play, sometimes delivering verbatim monologues to the audience and at other times playing other characters in a physical theatre style of presentation.
The director is a student completing an MA in Theatre Directing at St Mary's University in Twickenham.
Please note this is an unpaid role, but help will be given towards travelling expenses, and refreshments will be provided for morning and afternoon breaks.
Rehearsals will take place Monday to Friday (10 - 5) from the 29th August, with some Saturday rehearsals, in a location in Streatham.
Auditions will take place on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th August in Streatham.
The Character Breakdown is as follows:
Maria: 50 years old, Spanish (accent required), a lawyer. She is in mourning, following the death of her husband who died at St Christopher's Hospice, a few years ago.
The actress will also play multiple roles: Michael's deceased brother, Chorus, Yami (a character in a Hindu folk tale), Young Woman (a character in a Buddhist folk tale) and a hospice nurse.
Vicky: 55 years old. Born in Surrey, an actress and theatre director who loves folk tales, believes in life after death. Her Mum died in Woking Hospice 2 years ago.
The actress will also play multiple roles: Anthony's deceased wife from Goa, (accent required), Maria's mother in law from Swansea (accent required), Maria's cousin from Spain, (accent required), a stall holder, an oncologist, Chorus, and a Hindu goddess in a folk tale.
Mary: 67 years old. A published feminist writer, outspoken, witty, practical, an atheist. Her husband died in St Christopher's Hospice a few years ago.
This actress will also play multiple roles: Vicky's deceased Mum from Newmarket (accent required) a guest at Maria's wedding, Old Woman (a character in a folk tale), a GP's receptionist, Chorus and a Hindu goddess in a folk tale.
Anthony: mid - late 50s. An accountant, born in Goa, spiritual, regularly meditates. His wife died in St Christopher's Hospice last year.
This actor will also play multiple roles: Mary's deceased husband, young Michael, Maria's brother in law, Chorus, a GP, a Hindu god and a Wise Man.
Michael: early 50's. Voluntary worker. Shy, quiet, introvert. His twin brother died in St Christopher's Hospice some years ago.
This actor will also play multiple roles: Maria's deceased husband from Swansea (accent required), 'Death' in a folk tale, Chorus, a chef working in a hospice, a taxi driver and the character Yama in a Hindu folk tale.
